Scott Piercy shot 64 on the North Couse at Torrey Pines to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open. Phil Mickelson played the South Course to tw0-under par and is six shots back in his first PGA TOUR event of the season.
Piercy opened the round with eight birdies in the first nine holes. He made his only bogey on the 11th hole before adding birdies on the 16th and 18th holes. He will play the South Course in the second round.
Four players from the North Course are tied for second place with rounds of 65. They are Ben Crane, Ryuji Imada, Chris Tidland and Matt Every. Tom Pernice, Jr. is in sixth place with a round of 66 on the North Course. Robert Allenby continued his strong play with the best round of the day on the South Course – a five-under par, 67. He is part of a nine player tie for seventh place that includes Boo Weekley, Steve Lowery and rookie Rickie Fowler. Also in that group are Ricky Barnes, Vance Veazey, Josh Teater, Tom Gillis and Alex Prugh.
Mickelson is tied for 40th place after the first 18 holes but should move up the leaderboard after a round on the North Course. Another that should benefit from the North Course is Ernie Els, who is tied with Mickelson at two-under par.
