Tiger Woods out for 2010?

Tiger Woods announced Friday that he will be taking an indefinite leave of absence from the PGA TOUR and the game of golf to repair his relationships with his wife, children and family.  Many will and have questioned Woods’ announcement but it is what he needs to do in order to get his life back on track so he can pursue his goals both on and off the golf course.

The 2010 PGA TOUR season looked like one for the ages a few months back.  Woods and Mickelson shared the stage at the final FedEx Cup event, where Mickelson took home the TOUR Championship over Woods.  The rivalry between two of the greatest golfers in the game looked like it had come back.  Mickelson had seemed to rebound from a very tough year outside the ropes with both his wife and mother undergoing treatment for breast cancer.  He also added another victory over Woods at the World Golf Championship-HSBC Champions in China.

The TOUR will lose out financially the longer Woods stays away from the game.  He drives ratings, coverage and fan interest whenever he enters an event.  But, true fans know that there is a resurgence of young talent about to take the PGA TOUR stage in 2010 with the likes of Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Ryo Ishikawa.  Also, American Ryder Cup heroes Anthony Kim and Hunter Mahan could emerge from tough 2009 season to take the lead, once again, as the best young golfers on TOUR.

Will Woods be back for the Masters?

Only time will tell when Woods will rejoin the PGA TOUR.  This could have been a special year for Woods’ chase for Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major championship wins.  Three sites for this year’s majors are favorites of Woods – Augusta National, Pebble Beach and St. Andrews.  Could this have been the year golf saw a Grand Slam winner?

Woods will return when he is ready – and not when the media circus dies down.  He will return to the course a better man and a scarier foe.  Woods will be focused and determined on the course and, hopefully, with a stronger, happier family in tow.
