The United States team dominated the singles matches on the final day of the Presidents Cup at Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco, California to beat the International team 19 1/2 to 14 1/2 . Tiger Woods earned the clinching point with a 6-up victory over Y. E. Yang, who beat Woods in the final round of this year’s PGA Championship.
The U. S. team won six of the 12 matches on Sunday, with two ending all-square. Woods and Phil Mickelson were undefeated throughout the week to lead the Americans. For the International team, Vijay Singh had the best record, going 2-0-3, while, Camilo Villegas was the only player on either team to not pick up a point. Only two matches ended all-square on Sunday. Singh tied Lucas Glover and Mike Weir halved Justin Leonard.
U. S. victories
The singles matches started off with Hunter Mahan playing Camilo Villegas. Mahan won 2-and-1 for his second victory of the week. Stewart Cink, who asked captain Fred Couples for an early tee time, beat Adam Scott 4-and-3. Anthony Kim outplayed Robert Allenby for a 5-and-3 win. Sean O’Hair finished strong with an impressive 6-and-4 victory over Ernie Els. As mentioned earlier, Woods beat Yang and Mickelson defeated Retief Goosen 2-and-1.
International singles wins
Finishing strong, Geoff Ogilvy handed Steve Stricker his only loss of the week with a 2-and-1 victory. Ryo Ishikawa, the youngest Presidents Cup player ever at 19 years old, finished off a memorable week with a 2-and-1 victory over Kenny Perry. And, Tim Clark beat Zach Johnson 4-and-3.
