Woods tops PGA Championship leaderboard

pga-championshipTiger Woods set the tone early for the 91st PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club.  He opened the tournament with a five-under par, 67, to lead Padraig Harrington by one shot.

Woods, who started on the 10th hole, was bogey-free in the round.  He made birdies on the 12th and 15th to get out at two-under par.  After a par on the first hole, Woods made birdies on the second and third, adding another on the seventh hole.

Harrington, who dueled with Woods at last week’s Bridgestone Invitational, shot 68 in the opening round.  He also started on the 10th hole and made two birdies on the side, one at the 12th and another on the 16th.  Harrington’s only bogey came at the first hole.  He recovered quickly, making birdies on the next two holes and added a final birdie on the sixth hole.

Six players are tied for third place with rounds of 69, three-under par, headlined by Vijay Singh, David Toms and Hunter Mahan.  Also in that group are Robert Allenby, Mathew Goggin and Alvaro Quiros.  Eight players are tied at two-under par, including Lee Westwood, Paul Goydos and Graeme McDowell.  Tied with them are Ben Crane, Soren Kjeldsen, Michael Bradley, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Thongchai Jaidee.
