I regret that my two week break had me miss the U. S. Women’s Open but what a tournament! The third major for the LPGA Tour was fantastic…down to the final putt for birdie by Eun Hee Ji. Ji completed the come-from-behind win with a final round 71 to finish at even-par for the week and one shot better than Candie Kung, who set the score to beat after an early 69 gave her the lead.
Cristie Kerr had the lead going into the final day but shot 75 on Sunday to fall into a tie for third with In-Kyung Kim. Brittany Lincicome continued her strong play with a fifth place finish. Paula Creamer bounced back from injury with sixth place tie with Suzann Pettersen and Ai Miyazato.
Other big news from the U. S. Open was the resignation of LPGA Commissioner Carolyn Bivens. Bivens received notice when a letter signed by a reported 15 of the top players on Tour was sent to the LPGA Board of Directors after a meeting at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic. She has been replaced by Acting Commissioner Rear Admiral Marsha J. Evans, U.S. Navy (retired). Evans is a member of the LPGA Board of Directors. Also announced today was the appointment of Annika Sorenstam as Advisor to the Board of Directors.
Back to better news, the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic was an exciting event, outside of the players meeting to oust the commissioner. Eunjung Yi beat Morgan Pressel in a playoff. Pressel caught Yi with a final round 67 to force the playoff but Yi birdied the first sudden death hole to grab the win. The two finished regulation two-shots better than Michelle Wie, Song-Hee Kim and Seon Hwa Lee. Suzann Pettersen and Yani Tseng finished tied for sixth place. Lorena Ochoa tied for eighth place with Lindsey Wright, Nicole Castrale and Mikaela Parmlid.
