Gal leads Women’s British Open by one

women-british-openSandra Gal takes the early lead at the RICOH Women’s British Open, the LPGA’s third major.  Fighting back gust up to 30 miles per hour, Gal’s opening round 69 in one shot better than Angela Stanford and Song-Hee Kim.

Gal started her round with six straight pars, making birdie on the seventh hole.  She made the turn with birdies on the 10th and 11th holes to get to three-under par.  After a bogey on the 12th hole, Gal finished with birdies on the 15th and 17th holes, with a bogey on the 16th.

Only six players were at or better than par in the first round.  Stanford and Kim shot 70 to tie for second place.  Yuko Mitsuka and Hee Young Park are tied for fourth place at one-under par with Maria Hjorth in sixth place with an even-par, 72.

Four players are tied for seventh place at one-over par, including Michelle Wie.  With Wie are Christina Kim, Kyeong Bae and Vicki Laing.  Defending champion Jiyai Shin shot 77 in the first round and is tied for 52nd place.  Top ranked Lorena Ochoa is tied for 24th place after shooting 75, three-over par, in the first round.
