Sandra Gal shot 64 in the first round of the Wegmans LPGA at Locust Hill Country Club. Thanks to afternoon thunderstorms, play was suspended due to darkness leaving 30 players still on the course.
Starting on the 10th tee, Gal got off to a blistering start, carding five straight birdies from the 11th to 15th holes. She finished the first nine with a birdie on the 17th hole. Gal completed the bogey-free round with birdies on the first and ninth holes.
Gal leads Jiyai Shin by one shot with Becky Lucidi still on the course at six-under par through 15 holes, two shots behind Gal. Shin shot 65 in the opening round, with seven birdies and zero bogeys. Lucidi will play the final three holes in the morning but has seven birdies to one bogey on her card.
Five players, all in the clubhouse, are tied for sixth place at four-under par, including rookie Stacy Lewis and Morgan Pressel. Also at six-under are Brandi Jackson, Diana D’Alessio and Haeji Kang.
