Preview: Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial

cpi-logoThe PGA TOUR finishes the Texas swing at Hogan’s Alley for the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.  As per last week’s announcement, Phil Mickelson will not be on hand this week to defend his title at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Rory Sabbatini, who won at Colonial in 2007, enters this week as one of the favorites after having won last week.  He will have to fight back another hot golfer, Paul Casey.  Casey won last week on the European Tour at the BMW PGA Championship, moving him to third in the Official World Golf Rankings.  Also in the field this week are Geoff Ogilvy, Vijay Singh and Kenny Perry, who won this event in 2003 and 2005.  Zach Johnson, the FedEx Cup standings leader, looks to extend that lead this week.

Colonial Country Club underwent renovations to the bunkers, greens and tees last summer.  The 13th green was rebuilt to the original construction, some trees were moved and stone walls were added to two water hazards.  Also, Colonial gained an extra 150 yards, bringing the total yardage to 7,204 on the par-70 course.  The Fort Worth, Texas club has played host to this event since inception in 1946 and has seen champions like Ben Hogan, who has won five titles here. Colonial boasts a traditional layout and is ranked as one of the worlds best golf courses.  It has also played host to the 1941 U. S. Open, the 1975 Tournament Players Championship and the 1991 U. S. Women’s Open.
