Nick Watney earned his first win since the 2007 PGA TOUR season with a come from behind victory at the Buick Invitational.
Watney is off to a great start in 2009 with the win and two top 25 finishes in three events. He is scoring just over 68 per round on average in 2009 and has improved his World Golf Ranking to number 76.
Last year, Watney made the cut in 21 of 27 events and finished the year with five top 25 finishes. His best tournament was a fifth place finish at the Mercedes-Benz Championship, the first event of the year. Another notable finish was a tie for 11th at the Masters Tournament. Watney’s other top events were the PODS Championship (t-23), Arnold Palmer Invitational (t-21) and the Frys.com Open (t-20).
Watney earned his first PGA victory in 2007 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. For the season, Watney finished 17 events with three top 10 finishes. He finished tied for ninth at both the Buick Invitational and Children’s Miracle Network Classic. Other top finishes of 2007 came at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic (t-13), Wachovia Championship (t-24), The Barclays (t-25) and the Valero Texas Open (t-15).
Watney joined the PGA TOUR by way of the Nationwide Tour, where, in 2004, he finished fifth on the season-ending money list. As a rookie on the PGA in 2005, Watney had two top-10s on the season at the Buick Championship (t-9) and the Michelin Championship at Las Vegas (t-6). He finished the year at number 127 and earned his way back on TOUR with a fifth place finish at the PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament.
