McCarron leads Northern Trust Open by two shots

Scott McCarron shot 68 in the second round of the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club to take a two shot lead over Steve Stricker and Tommy Armour III heading into the weekend.

McCarron started the round with two birdies in the first three holes.  He finished out the front side with bogeys on the fifth and ninth holes, adding a birdie on the seventh.  He settled down on the back side with four straight pars before finishing the day with birdies on the 14th and 18th holes.

Stricker followed an opening round 68 with a 66 on Friday.  He started on the back nine with three birdies on the side.  After making eagle on the first hole, Stricker finished the day with a bogey on the fifth and a birdie on the sixth hole.  Armour also started on the 10th hole and, after five pars, made bogey on the 15th hole before birdies on the 16th and 17th holes.  Armour played the second nine at three-under par, with birdies on the first, third and sixth holes.

Defending champion, and day one leader, Phil Mickelson shot 72 in the second round, dropping into a tie for fourth place with five other golfers.  Geoff Ogilvy (67), K. J. Choi (69), Pat Perez (66), Rory Sabbatini (67) and Luke Donald (69) join Mickelson at seven-under par after two rounds.  Rounding out the top 10 at six-under par, four shots back of McCarrontn, are Kevin Na (69), Andres Romero (70) and Bill Lunde (67).
