PGA TOUR adds excitement to FedEx Cup for 2009

The PGA TOUR announced improvements to the 2009 playoffs and FedEx Cup.  The best change for the upcoming season is THE TOUR Championship will count.  The season-ending event will carry the same field of 30 golfers but, all playoff points will be reset so the entire field will have a shot at the $10 million prize.

The point system starts from the first event and continues through the BMW Championship, with playoff events carrying more weight.  For example, the winners share for a regular season event yields 500 points and a playoff win delivers 2,500 points.  The fields for the first two playoff events will be trimmed bringing The Barclays down to 125 golfers, from 144.  That trend continues through the second event, the Deutsche Bank Championship where the field drops to 100 players from 120.  The BMW Championship will remain at 70 players.

The changes look good on paper and seem to eliminate what happened last season when Vijay Singh won the first two events.  Bringing excitement and drama to THE TOUR Championship should give the PGA a great end to the season.

Everything begins this week in Hawaii at the Mercedes-Benz Championship.

Let’s tee it up!
