Trouble on PGA Tour?

The PGA Tour is in a tough spot with all the buzz about the $20 million race for Dubai for this year’s European Tour.  The news of top talent like Phil Mickelson thinking about playing in Europe regularly as soon as next year and, more importantly, young guns like Anthony Kim and Camilo Villegas already joined up for the 2009 season could be devastating for professional golf here in the United States.

The PGA Tour needs more than Tiger Woods to keep fans and television viewers tuned in every week.  With a sense of migration taking place, the PGA Tour Playoffs and its trophy – the FedEx Cup – are on the clock to grab the attention of players worldwide.  If the 2009 Cup race is as exciting as it was this year, the PGA may lose more than viewers for the final month of the season.

Money talks but, it’s not the $20 million that is going to bring more PGA stars to Europe.  It is the realistic chance to win and, as it stands right now, the PGA Playoff race could be over after a week.  Don’t fault Vijay Singh for winning two weeks straight and making PGA officials scramble for answers.  The set up has to change dramatically for the 2009 season so that more top international players will want to come and play here.  Otherwise, the PGA Tour may lose Tiger to the European Tour too.
