Troy Matteson shot an opening round 63, nine-under par, on Disney’s Palm Course to take the early lead at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic, presented by Wal-Mart. Players are playing Disney’s Magnolia and Palm courses in the opening rounds.
Matteson started the day with an eagle on the par-5 first hole and closed out the front nine with three straight birdies. After a bogey on the 11th hole, he responded with birdies on the 12th and 13th holes and an eagle on the 14th before closing the day with a birdie on the 17th hole.
Matteson leads three by a shot. Scott Verplank, Kevin Streelman and Jimmy Walker shot 64s in their opening round. After opening with six pars, Verplank made eight birdies over the final 12 holes, including five straight from the seventh to 11th holes. Streelman made a birdie on the second hole and a bogey on the fifth hole but finished the day with eight birdies in 11 holes, including six in a row. Walker didn’t make a mistake on the Palm Course and had eight birdies in the round.
Five players are tied at seven-under par. On Magnolia, Rich Beem made seven birdies and no bogeys for his 65 while, Robert Gamez carded six birdies, an eagle and a bogey on the same course. Playing Palm, Steve Marino and Kirk Triplett were both bogey-free with seven birdies. Robert Garrigus made one bogey and eight birdies.
