Spotlight: Morgan Pressel

Morgan Pressel won her sponsor’s event this week at the Kapalua LPGA Classic.  Serving as tournament host, Pressel played her way to the winner’s circle with two clutch birdies in the final three holes, including a key sand save on the 17th hole.

Pressel is having a good 2008 season.  She played in 22 events with five top 10 finishes.  Prior to the win, her best finish this season came at the Sybase Classic, where she tied for second after a final round 66.  Her other top finishes came at the HSBC Women’s Open (t-8th), the McDonald’s LPGA Championship (t-6th) and the Wegmans LPGA (t-10th).

Pressel’s first career victory came at the first major of the 2007 season – the Kraft Nabisco Championship – where she became the youngest player in LPGA history to win a major title at 19 years old.  Pressel finished the season with eight top 10 finishes.  She finished second at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic and third at the Fields Open in Hawaii.  She was also a member of the U. S. Solheim Cup Team.

Pressel joined the LPGA Tour after finishing tied for sixth at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, earning exempt status.  In her rookie season, Pressel had eight top 10 finishes, including third place at the Longs Drugs Challenge and fifth place finishes at the SBS Open at Turtle Bay, ShopRite LPGA Classic and Corona Morelia Championship.  She finished third in the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year award.

Pressel’s professional accomplishments came after a terrific amateur career.  As an amateur, she finished second at the 2005 U.S. Women’s Open and also qualified for that tournament in 2003 and 2001, at the age of 12.  Pressel played in six LPGA events in 2005 on sponsor exemptions and never finished outside the top 25.  Her best finishes came at the State Farm Classic (t-5th), the Kraft Nabisco Championship (t-19th) and the Michelob ULTRA Open (t-19th).  She also won the U. S. Women’s Amateur in 2005, spending most of the season as Golfweek’s top ranked amateur.

Pressel is currently ranked 13th on the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings.
