Spotlight: Helen Alfredsson
Helen Alfredsson won her second event of the 2008 LPGA season at the Grand China Air LPGA in Hainan Island, China.
Alfredsson has played in 23 events this season with nine top 25 finishes. In July, she notched her first win of the season at the Evian Masters. She started the 2008 season missing four straight cuts but rebounded in the fifth event – Kraft Nabisco Championship – where she finished tied for 21st. She also had a runner up finish at the U. S. Women’s Open. Her other top finishes came at the Sybase Classic (t-18th), Wegmans LPGA (t-19th), Safeway Classic (t-2nd), Samsung World Championship (t-17th) and the Kapalua LPGA Classic (t-22nd).
Alfredsson joined the LPGA Tour in 1992 after playing on the Women Professional Golfers’ European Tour, where she was rookie of the year in 1989. She won the Weetabix Women’s British Open in 1990 and played on the European Solheim Cup Team that same year. She has been a member of eight Solheim Cup teams and was captain of the 2007 team.
Alfredsson was named rookie of the year in 1992 on the LPGA Tour with eight top 10 finishes, including runner up at the Mazda Japan Classic after a four-hole, sudden death playoff with Betsy King. She has a total of five LPGA victories with the last coming at the 2003 Longs Drug Challenge.
Alfredsson is currently ranked seventh on the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings.
