Cameron Beckman used seven birdies over the last 12 hole to catch Kevin Sutherland and eventually beat him on the first sudden death playoff hole to take home the Frys.com Open title.
Beckman shot 63 in the final round with his only miscue coming on the par-5, fourth hole, where he made bogey. Sutherland, who led going into today, played well enough to win but a late bogey on the par-3, 16th hole dropped him back into a tie. He made three straight birdies on the sixth, seventh and eighth holes, adding two more on the 12th and 15th.
The playoff started on the 18th hole. Sutherland’s second shot was just over eight feet and Beckman had almost 30 feet to the pin. Both players two-putted for the half. The playoff moved to the 17th hole where both players were in the fairway off the tee. Sutherland missed the green to the right on his second shot, where Beckman hit his approach to 6 and a half feet. Sutherland’s third shot crossed the green and he put that shot to about four feet. Beckman missed the birdie attempt and tapped in for par, and the win.
Mathew Goggin moved up to finish third, one shot out of the playoff, with a final round of 63. Mike Weir, J. J. Henry and Arron Oberholser tied for fourth place, four shots back. Paul Goydos, Steve Allen, Michael Sim and Pat Perez, who moved up from 35th place, finished tied for seventh.
