Two in a row: Harrington wins PGA Championship
Aug 10th, 2008 | By TeeOff | Category: Golf, Majors, News, PGAPadraig Harrington wins the PGA Championship by two shots, sealing the victory with a clutch par putt on the final hole. Having to play two rounds Sunday, Harrington was near flawless carding 66 in the third and fourth rounds to take his second straight major championship.
The third round ended on Sunday and most of the field played a full round. J. B. Holmes started the day with the lead but fell off the pace with a final round 81. Ben Curtis took the lead after the third round ended and was in the hunt after a birdie on the 14th hole. Unfortunately, Curtis couldn’t hold on as he made bogeys on the 15th and 17th holes to finish in second place, two shots behind Harrington.
The story on Sunday was Sergio Garcia. Garcia was in prime position for his first major win playing the front nine four-under par. After a string of pars from 10 through 15, Garcia tried to play the safe shot on the 16th hole but put his approach shot in the water. He then missed a birdie putt on the 17th hole and closed with a bogey on 18.
Almost Tiger-esque, Harrington started the day six shots off the pace after opening rounds of 71 and 74. But, after a third round 66 on Sunday, he had a chance. He started the final round in fourth place and played the front nine one-under par and three shots back of playing partner, and leader, Garcia. Birdies on te 10th, 12th and 13th holes erased the deficit. After a bogey on the 14th hole, Harrington made three straight clutch putts on the final holes. The first for par on the 16th hole followed by a birdie putt to grab a two shot advantage and a final par save on the final hole to seal the win.
