Tournament Preview: The Barclays

The first round of the FedEx Cup playoff series is The Barclays.  The tournament garnered headlines very early in the season as the PGA Tour decided to move the event to Ridgewood Country Club from Westchester Country Club, ending a 40-year run for the historic course.

The first round of the playoffs include the top 144 players in the final FedEx Cup standings.  The regular season points are erased and players start with the top seed having 100,000 points down to 92,070 for 144th place.  Players will earn point at each stop with “cuts” made after each event.

After The Barclays, only 120 players will play at the Deutsche Bank Championship the next week.  For the third playoff stop, the BMW Championship, only 70 players will start with no 36-hole cut.  Finishing at THE TOUR Championship, only 30 players will battle for the Cup.

Ridgewood was originally designed by A. W. Tillinghast in 1929, with a remodel coming last year headed by Gil Hanse.  The course will measure 7,319 yards and play to a par-71.  The course has played host to the 2001 Senior PGA Championship, 1990 U. S. Senior Open, 1974 U. S. Amateur and the 1935 Ryder Cup.
