Round 1: Vijay, Sergio impress
Aug 25th, 2008 | By TeeOff | Category: FedEx Cup, Golf, OpinionVijay Singh had an interesting August. He won the World Golf Championship-Bridgestone Invitational then missed two straight cuts, including the PGA Championship. Following those disappointments, Singh rebounds with a big win at the first playoff event - The Barclays.
Sergio Garcia looked like he had control of his putter, especially on the first playoff hole when he drained a 27 footer. He looked relaxed and poised to make a run at the FedEx Cup. He has played well in August following a second place finish at the PGA Championship with this playoff loss. The notable thing with Garcia was his attitude. He cheered Singh’s putt on the first playoff hole and he was gracious in defeat, two things he has not done in recent past.
Where were the other big names?
Phil Mickelson was never really in contention and his final round 68 looks like he is starting a bad trend. Lately, he has gotten off to slow starts at tournaments, playing his way out of contention in the early rounds (British Open). Then, he plays well on the weekend when nothing is on the line and musters a top 10 or 20 finish. When will the real number two step up?
Some of the top 10 players in the world failed to make the cut. Notably, the red hot Padraig Harrington. Also missing the mark was Ernie Els, Geoff Ogilvy and Adam Scott.
