PGA Championship round cancelled; Romero gets in a 65

Andres Romero shot a record-tying 65 in the third round that was cancelled with six players yet to tee off, including second-round leader J. B. Holmes.  Romero’s round is only the seventh 65 at Oakland Hills in a major championship.

Rains and thunder brought the players into the clubhouse just past 2:00 p.m. and, four hours later, the PGA cancelled the day setting up a 36-hole final at a major championship.  Seve Ballesteros won the British Open in 1979, the last 36-hole final.

Romero carded seven birdies on the day and finished at two-over par for the tournament, jumping up 40 spots on the leaderboard.  He is currently tied for eighth but everyone around him are in the early stages of the third round.  Yet to tee off are Holmes, Ben Curtis, Justin Rose, Charlie Wi, Henrik Stenson and David Toms.  Angel Cabrera and Brandt Snedeker are on the first hole.

With only 25 players completing the third round, Romero has a slight advantage having to only play 18 holes where most of his competitors face a grueling day.  The course may ease up on the players, especially on the greens, with the heavy rain.
