Tournament Preview: John Deere Classic
Jul 7th, 2008 | By TeeOff | Category: Golf, Preview, TournamentsThe PGA Tour stops in Illinois for the John Deere Classic. Johnathan Byrd edged out Tim Clark with a final round 66 for the third title of his career.
With the added bonus of a British Open exemption, the field features some of the top young golfers in the game. J. B. Holmes, Sean O’Hair, Aaron Baddeley, Carl Petterson and Camilo Villegas. Also in the lineup are former Masters winner Zach Johnson, Kenny Perry, D. J. Trahan, Chad Campbell, Heath Slocum and Bubba Watson.
The course is fairly new, having opened in 2000, and was designed by D. A. Weibring. Based on an old-time philosophy and feel, the course stretches to 7,213 yards and only holds a par-71. About 70 bunkers are strategically placed throughout the course and vary in depth and shape. Precision and shot making are the key elements to the layout as gentle doglegs, and a few blind spots, dull the need for power. Weibring utilized the natural features of the former horse farm and Rock River, which is visible on nine holes.
