Duke, Wi lead John Deere Classic

With a chance for an exemption at next week’s British Open, Ken Duke and Charlie Wi shot 64 to hold a one-shot lead after the first round of the John Deere Classic.

Duke started his round with a birdie on the 10th hole and carded three more on the side.  He made the turn with birdies on the first and second holes and finished with two birdies and a bogey over the last three holes.

Wi also started with a birdie on 10 and carded two other birdies and an eagle on the par-5, 17th hole to finish his first nine at five-under par.  He started the back with a birdie on the first hole and finished the day with seven pars and a birdie on the seventh hole.

Kenny Perry is in the hunt again after firing an opening round of 65.  He is tied with Eric Axley, Garrett Willis and Will MacKenzie at six-under par.  There are eight golfers tied at five-under after the first round, including Woody Austin and Brad Adamonis.  Defending champion Jonathan Byrd shot a four-under, 67, and is tied for 15th place.
