Tournement Preview: U. S. Open at Torrey Pines

The U. S. Open is held at Torrey Pines this week in San Diego, California, where Angel Cabrera is ready to defend his title. But, the talk is about Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, as the pair will be playing together at the start of the tournament.

Woods is coming off knee surgery and has not played since the Masters and has won six Buick Invitationals at Torrey Pines. Having grown up in San Diego playing Torrey Pines, Mickelson is having a pretty good season with two victories and five top 10s. However, there are others who have been playing some solid golf this season. Here are three to look out for during the week – Trevor Immelman, the Masters champion who finished second last week; Sergio Garcia, won THE PLAYERS Championship and has seemed to solve his putting woes; Geoff Ogilvy, with a win and five top 10s he is having a good season and, oh yeah, he is an Open champion.

Torrey Pines is a municipal course, offering two courses – North and South. For the U. S. Open, the players will be on the South course that has been tightened with thicker, U. S. Open rough compared to the Buick Invitational earlier this year. It will also be the longest U. S. Open course in history at 7,643 yards. Rees Jones was in charge of making Torrey Pines Open-ready, as he has done before for U. S. Open courses earning him the moniker “Open Doctor.”
