Kenny Perry set the bar for those in the group behind him and it was high enough. Perry walked away with the Buick Open trophy by one shot over Woody Austin and Bubba Watson.
Perry shot 66 in the final round. He started the day with birdie and carded five in the first 10 holes. He slipped with bogeys on 13 and 15 but made an eagle on the par-4 14th hole and, along with a birdie on the 16th, he pared out at 19-under for the championship.
Austin and Watson were in the final group and had to catch Perry. Both had chances but couldn’t captialize and finished with 68s, leaving them one shot back.
Austin had three birdies and a bogey on the front nine and seemed to be in control. Three straight birdies on 12, 13 and 14 didn’t hurt and, after a great par save on the 15th, Austin made birdie on the 16th hole to go up one on Perry. Tough luck hit Austin on the final two holes as he finished with bogeys to finish one back.
Watson had a busy front nine with three bogeys and three birdies. He played the back with birdies on every other hole through 16 but couldn’t add one more over the final two holes to tie Perry.
Bob Tway finished strong with a final round 65 to move into a tie for fourth with Ken Duke and Matt Jones. Brian Gay and Lucas Glover tied for seventh at 16-under par. Dudley Hart closed with a 71 to finish tied for ninth with John Rollins and Fredrik Jacobson. Final round leader, Daniel Chopra, couldn’t recover from a rough start – four-over after seven holes – finishing with a three-over, 75.
