Annika Sorenstam to retire at the end of the 2008 season
May 13th, 2008 | By TeeOff | Category: Golf, LPGA, News, Player SpotlightAfter her 72nd victory at last week’s Michelob ULTRA Open, Annika Sorenstam announced that she will be retiring after the season. All golf fans should enjoy the remainder of this LPGA season as the best rivalry in golf - Annika v. Lorena Ochoa - will intensify.
Sorenstam changed women’s golf with her dominance over the last 15 years. Among her 72 victories, she has 10 major titles, including the career grand slam. She said that if she can’t give 100 percent, then she will retire. With a marriage scheduled for next year, Sorenstam will enter a new chapter in her life.
The two major career marks that Sorenstam will not reach are the total career wins and major title victories. Kathy Whitworth holds the career wins crown with 88 victories and Patty Berg has 15 major titles to her name. Both are reachable, but Sorenstam was never about her name in the record books. She is, though, the only women to ever shoot 59 in a tournament at the Moon Valley C.C. in the second round of the 2001 Standard Register PING Tournament.
Highlights of a great career:
- Turned professional in 1992, and beginning play on the LPGA Tour in 1994
- 72 LPGA victories (88 worldwide)
- 10 major championships
- Record eight Rolex Player of the Year awards
- Record-tying eight money list titles
- Six Vare Trophies for the lowest scoring average
- Eight Golf Writers Association of America Female Player of the Year awards
- Eight Solheim Cup teams
- Inducted in 2003 to the LPGA Tour and World Golf Halls of Fame
