Tournament Preview: Zurich Classic of New Orleans

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans returns for another exciting tournament. Nick Watney is the defending champion and looks to find some of the magic that brought him his first PGA Tour win.

Watney will have his work cut out for him this week as 10 of the top 50 golfers in the world will be in New Orleans. Steve Stricker, Padraig Harrington and Retief Goosen lead a list of seasoned veterans that, along with young stars like Anthony Kim, Jonathan Byrd and Andres Romero, look to make this year’s tournament one to remember.

The tournament has PGA roots back to 1938 and claims champions from Byron Nelson, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus to Vijay Singh, K. J. Choi and local favorite David Toms. Designed by Pete Dye, who created the TPC flagship Sawgrass course, the TPC Louisiana utilizes its flat landscape to its advantage and really test golfers. Working with Tour players Steve Elkington and Kelly Gibson, Dye put together a 7,300 yard par-72 course that utilizes natural vegetation, including numerous cypress trees.
