Player Spotlight: Geoff Ogilvy

Geoff Ogilvy wins the World Golf Championship-CA Championship becoming the third golfer to win more than one WGC event (Tiger Woods, Darren Clarke). It is Ogilvy’s first victory since the 2006 U. S. Open. His first Tour victory came at the 2005 Chrysler Classic of Tucson.

His season was off to a rough start, missing the cut in his first three events. After the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championships, Ogilvy turned things around with a 10th place finish at the PODS Championship and 14th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Last season, Ogilvy had seven top 10 finishes along with six other top 25s. He finished 13th on the PGA Tour money list. He also earned his way onto the International team for the Presidents Cup. As one of two rookies on the team, Oglivy went 2-3-0, beating Stewart Cink in singles and teamed with Nick O’Hern to beat Cink and Lucas Glover in the Four-Ball matches.

He had a career year in 2006, winning his first major title and first WGC event. Playing in his third U. S. Open, Ogilvy didn’t collapse as Winged Foot took down the other top golfers in the final round. On the last two holes, he chipped in for par on 17 and, on the final hole, saved par with a nice up-and-down. At the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, Ogilvy was ranked 52nd in the 64-player field. He beat Davis Love III 4 and 3 in the 36-hole final. With all of his first four matches going extra holes, he set a tournament record playing 129 holes in the week.

Ogilvy really enjoys playing the World Golf Championship events. He won the Match Play Championship in 2006 and was runner-up in 2007. His two CA Championships yielded a third place finish last year and Monday’s win.

The win puts Ogilvy into the top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
