Tip of the week: Putting
Jan 7th, 2008 | By TeeOff | Category: Golf, TipsPutting is one of the most crucial parts of the game. Many strokes are wasted on the putting surface because of speed, misreads or not hitting the ball square. The key to sinking more putts is trust. Trust in your swing. Trust in your speed. Trust in your read.
Practice make perfect, they always say. With putting, practice will not make you perfect…it is golf after all…but, it will help you score better on the course. Make your time on the practice green situational. Start with lag putts from 30 feet to get a feel for the speed of the green. Then work down to 20, 10, five and three footers. At first, just get a feel for the speed and do not worry about the break. Getting a feel for the speed of a green will help develop rhythm. Rhythm will help sink more putts.
When out on the course, set goals for the round like keeping your putt total under 40. Then, from there work down to no three putts and, even better, less than 30 putts per round. Make notes on the scorecard of how many putts you had and why - “Hit first putt 10 feet short; lipped out the second” - so you can better practice to improve for next time.
