New PGA cut system used at Sony Open
Jan 12th, 2008 | By TeeOff | Category: Golf, News, PGA, Rules, Tournaments, Watch ListThe Sony Open becomes the first tournament to utilize a new system to generate the cut line for PGA Tour events.
The cut line for tournaments is the low 70 golfers and ties. The new rule tries to keep the weekend field at, or near, that number. Under the new system, if the field, with ties, becomes greater than 78 players then the cut line will be moved to the lower score…or the number nearest 70.
At the Sony Open, the top 70 players and ties was an even par, 140, leaving 87 golfers to play the weekend. Under the new rule, moving the cut line to one-under par, 139, leaves 69 golfers. The players effected by the adjusted cut line will get credit for making the cut and, therefore, receive a share of the official prize money and the FedEx Cup points.
