Cut rule going under review
Jan 31st, 2008 | By TeeOff | Category: Golf, News, PGA, RulesThe PGA is going to review the new cut policy that was instituted in November. In just three events, the policy has fallen under sharp criticism from players looking for some uniformity when setting a cut line.
The Sony Open had 18 players MDFed (made cut, did not finish). The Buick Invitational had 19 players MDFed. The players argument is that any one of those 37 golfers could have made a run and, if not contend, improve their winnings and FedEx Cup point total. At the Sony, Parker McLachlin squeaked in at the new, adjusted cut line and finished in 10th place. Similarly, Justin Leonard finished fifth at the Buick, improving from the adjusted cut.
According to PGA Tour commissioner, Tim Finchem, the Player Advisory Council will review the policy at the Northern Trust Open, February 14-17th at the Riviera Country Club in Palisades, CA. Two ideas discussed last year were lowering the cut line from top 70 and ties or, having a Saturday cut.
