Golf wish list: hybrids and wedges
Dec 8th, 2007 | By TeeOff | Category: Golf, Tips, Watch ListThe two hottest clubs on the market now are the hybrid and wedge. Players, especially the mid- to high-handicapper, are adding at least one hybrid for a variety of shots. The wedge is making a comeback as many players have already utilized a new driver and are looking to improve their play around the greens.
The hybrid is a great mid-level club that takes the pressure off hitting a 3- or 4-iron approach, from the rough, with a stiff wind in your face…then you swing too hard and leave yourself with a good 5-iron left…ugh! A hybrid is made for those conditions and, in most cases, will give you better contact from anywhere you lie.
Being that golf is a game of feel, a nice wedge collection in your bag is key and will leave you prepared for any shot. Pros are always saying the score is made from 100 yard and in…so why not cover yourself. Here is an average look at wedges:
- pitching wedge = 130 yards
- sand wedge (yes, it can be used on grass) = 90 yards
- lob wedge = 70 yards
The big gap is between the sand and pitching wedge. Try a 52- or 54-degree wedge (gap wedge) to play between 100 and 130 yards. This will allow you to ease up on the SW and make better runs at the pin.
As for myself, I am looking to add a 1-iron hybrid (Cleveland Hi-bore) because I have given up on trying to hit a driver. The iron feel gives me more confidence off the box and the benefits of the fairway over the rough and trees more than compensates for the loss in yardage. The wedge gap has killed me too. I am looking into either the Titleist or Cleveland designs…
